War in the North Collectibles, Scrolls, and Secrets
Track Sorcerer’s Scrolls, Westernesse artifacts, gems, herbs, hidden caches, class secrets, and random loot without losing a completion run.
Three kinds of “collectible”
War in the North mixes fixed secrets, quest counters, and random loot. Treating all three the same creates false bug reports. Fixed secrets are in a known room or class path. Quest counters advance only when the named item is picked up. Random loot can fail to appear in one run even when the route is correct.
Sorcerer’s Scrolls: 7/7 route
The Cult of the Lidless Eye chain begins with the Malignant Scroll dropped by a Goblin Sorcerer in Fornost. Historical guides then ask for seven Sorcerer’s Scrolls in total. Use the quest log as the source of truth:
- Pick up the opening scroll and take it to a learned NPC when the objective asks for counsel.
- Search every gilded chest and side branch in the Ettenmoors and later forest routes before crossing the final checkpoint.
- After each pickup, confirm the counter changes (for example, 3/7 to 4/7).
- Return to Elrond with 7/7 before the Siege of Nordinbad.
The exact current chest behavior is not documented by Aspyr. If a chest is empty, note the platform, difficulty, host/guest role, and patch before calling it a Legacy bug. Never delete a save to force a respawn.
Westernesse Artifacts
Work of Westernesse asks for three artifacts found in Fornost or the Barrow-downs. Break barrels, crates, rock pillars, and tomb urns. The old guide describes these drops as random, which means a clean route can still end at 2/3. Finish the region, return to town, and replay or refresh the area only after the counter proves the missing item is real.
At the hand-in, choose Angmir or Buri intentionally. The two smiths are a build choice, not two copies of the same reward. Keep the artifacts in the inventory until the smith accepts them.
Elf-stone gems
The historical counter is 4 Green Beryl, 3 Golden Beryl, and 2 Red Beryl. The Ettenmoors route contains the relevant breakables and loot piles. Search the Coldfells caves, the ravine, and the High Moors before returning to Rivendell. Ask Gloin to appraise the complete set, then decide whether to take Angmir’s equipment or the documented silver alternative.
Miruvor ingredients
The Poet unlocks Miruvor. Arwen requests 5 Miriloth Blooms, 2 Gilivor Crystals, and 1 Mountain Honey. Pick them up while clearing the Ettenmoors; the old route places ingredients in caves, along the ravine, and near stream crossings. Return to Arwen for the two flasks, then start Truesilver.
Class secrets and caches
Some secrets use a hero ability rather than a universal prompt. Eradan can read ranger tracks and access ranger caches; Farin can break heavy obstructions; Andriel’s role is less about a locked cache and more about preserving the party through a control or recovery interaction. On a first pass, rotate the active hero at every suspicious dead end instead of assuming the room is empty.
Record a simple table in your run notes:
| Region | Fixed secret | Quest counter | Random item sweep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fornost | Ranger/Farin paths, gilded chests | Scrolls, tome | Crates and barrels |
| Barrow-downs | Ranger cache, tomb rooms | Athelas, artifacts | Pillars and urns |
| Ettenmoors | Caves and ravine paths | Gems, Miruvor items | Caches and loot piles |
| Mirkwood | Hidden Orc camp | Captive, black pearl lead | Webbed clearings |
Current-edition save protocol
The Legacy Edition is reported to use autosave, while launch discussions include guest progression and 0KB-save reports. After collecting a quest item, pause at the next safe checkpoint and verify the counter after reload or a controlled host rejoin. This is a reversible verification routine, not a guaranteed fix.
