Is War in the North Legacy Edition Crossplay?
The current evidence for crossplay between Steam, consoles, and other PC stores, plus a safe platform-pair test when the answer matters to your group.
Quick answer
Crossplay is not officially confirmed in the sources checked on 14 August 2026. Steam lists online co-op, but that only proves the Steam build has an online mode. SteamDB also identifies Epic Online Services in the PC metadata; an SDK presence is not a platform-pair compatibility promise.
If your party mixes Steam, Epic, GOG, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, or Switch 2, do not buy several copies on the assumption that everyone can join the same lobby. Treat a successful test between one pair as evidence for that pair only.
Status: unknown across the full platform matrix. The page is intentionally conservative because no publisher matrix or repeatable multi-platform test was available during this check.
What the available listings actually establish
| Question | Current answer | Evidence state |
|---|---|---|
| Does the Steam build advertise online co-op? | Yes | Steam/SteamDB listing |
| Does it advertise local split-screen? | Yes | Steam/SteamDB listing |
| Does Steam list Remote Play Together? | Yes | Steam/SteamDB listing |
| Does Epic Online Services appear in PC metadata? | Yes | SteamDB metadata |
| Does that prove Steam-to-console play? | No | Not documented |
| Does that prove Steam-to-Epic or Steam-to-GOG play? | No | Not documented |
| Is there an official crossplay table? | Not found in this check | Unknown |
The listing is useful for understanding the modes shipped with the PC product, not for filling in unsupported platform combinations. See the Steam feature record and the Legacy Edition store page.
A low-risk crossplay test
Run this before a long campaign and before a refund window closes:
- Write down the exact platform, store, region, game version, and account type for each player.
- Make sure every copy is the Legacy Edition, not the delisted 2011 application.
- Start with a private lobby and one invite. Do not test matchmaking, Remote Play, and cross-store play at the same time.
- Join, load a short section, cross one checkpoint, and exit normally.
- Reopen the same pair and test one character or equipment change. This checks session stability, not cross-progression.
- Record the result as a matrix row, for example
Steam -> PS5: invite visible / join failed / connected.
The result should be repeated by a second pair before it becomes a site-wide claim. A PC-to-PC success does not tell us anything about PlayStation or Nintendo network boundaries.
If the invite never appears
First separate an unsupported pairing from an ordinary network problem. Test the same platform and store with a known-good friend. If that works, the mixed pair is the leading variable. If it fails too, use the multiplayer not working checklist and the connection failed checklist without changing several router or save settings at once.
Do not disable security software, delete saves, or forward ports just because the game uses Epic Online Services. Those actions do not establish crossplay and can remove useful evidence.
Sources and evidence boundary
- Legacy Edition Steam store page — first-party product listing.
- SteamDB metadata — third-party feature and technology snapshot.
- PCGaming launch discussion — player questions and reports, not platform policy.
The answer changes only when Aspyr documents the matrix or repeatable tests cover the exact platform pair being discussed.
