War in the North Character Switching Explained
How Legacy Edition hero switching changes solo planning, equipment checks, party roles, and the limits of current platform evidence on launch.
Quick answer
Legacy Edition is reported to let solo players swap between Eradan, Andriel, and Farin during play. The purpose is practical: you can take direct control of the role needed for a revive, ranged pick, control spell, or frontline hold instead of leaving every decision to companion AI.
The feature does not prove three local players can hot-swap freely, and it does not make the heroes interchangeable. Controls and timing should be checked on the platform in hand.
Status: the feature is reported by contemporary release coverage; exact button prompts and multiplayer restrictions remain platform-specific.
Why switching changes the old solo plan
The original design already divides the party into three jobs. Eradan brings bow pressure, stealth, and evasive movement. Andriel protects and recovers the party. Farin absorbs pressure and creates space with heavy attacks and War Cry-style abilities.
Without direct switching, a solo player often builds around the character selected at the start of a section and hopes the AI fills the gaps. With switching, the better question becomes: which hero should I control for this encounter, and which two loadouts must be ready when I hand control back?
A useful encounter loop
- Scout as Eradan. Use ranged pressure or mobility to identify dangerous archers, narrow paths, or a revive route.
- Anchor as Farin. Take control when enemies collapse on the group or a heavy attack can interrupt the push.
- Stabilise as Andriel. Switch when a shield, recovery, or control window is more valuable than another damage rotation.
- Return to the best finisher. Do not switch simply because the button is available; switch when the new role changes the outcome.
This is a decision framework, not a claim that every encounter has one correct hero.
Equipment checklist before leaving camp
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Weapon is legal for the hero | Bows are Eradan’s lane, staves Andriel’s, and the largest axe/hammer/crossbow options Farin’s in the original system reference |
| Healing and power items are stocked | A switch is only useful if the replacement hero can act immediately |
| One defensive answer is equipped | A control or shield option is more valuable than a second narrow damage bonus when learning a section |
| Skill points are spent | The manual grants points on level-up and supports respec tokens; an unused point is lost readiness |
| Visual and save state are checked | Launch-week client-save reports make it worth confirming that the selected hero still has the expected gear |
Solo versus co-op
In solo play, switching is a control optimisation. In online co-op, each player still needs to respect the heroes selected by the other players. Do not assume you can take someone else’s character during their session, and do not use the solo feature as evidence for crossplay or shared progression.
For a new group, choose roles before the first long run: Farin holds, Eradan deletes exposed targets, and Andriel protects the team. Use a short checkpoint to verify who owns the switch prompt and whether gear remains intact after a transition.
